Cabin in the Woods
By Jim Clarkson
October 21, 2012
A lifetime wandering
Through the woods
Sampling as I go
But never fully satisfied
Aimlessly walking
To find my place
Out of nowhere
A noise startles me
Beckons me
Wakes me from my reverie
And guides me
To a place I have not been before
I see a cabin
Warm in its glow
Full of light
An island in the darkness
Calls to me
Luring me
The crackling of a fire
Beckons sweet warmth
A place to rest
And gather my thoughts
Of hopes and dreams
Left by the wayside
The years that left me cold
Yearn for its embrace
Quite peace
From all the noise
Settling my mind
Lulling me to sleep
Suddenly awakened
Like a splash
Of cold water
In the face
I gaze around
In confusion
The fire has gone out
And I feel the cold
Creeping back in
To my bones
Like a wave
Of despair
Once again
I collapse inwards
And plunge
Into myself
To the security
Of loneliness
And yet
A faint spark
Still glows
In the cold hearth
Faintly whispering
Of the warmth it once held
An invitation of
False intimacy
Of what could
Or would not be
Turns me toward
A new direction
On the outside
Every new day
Sets the pace
To discovery
Of my cabin
In the woods
